Full employment will help individuals, families, and the economy as a whole, while promoting equality and social stability. Equally important, creating a full-employment economy can be joined effectively with two other fundamental policy aims: ending our dependence on fossil fuels and creating an economy powered by clean energy.Economist Robert Pollin, Author of Back to Full Employment 2012
The world is less and less disposed “to wait for the miracle”—to believe that things will right themselves without actionon our part… There is no possibility of balancing the Budget except by increasing income, which is only done by increasing employment. -- John Maynard Keynes, The Means to Prosperity 1933
In earlier sections, we looked at how corporate corruption robs middle class families of billions of dollars every year and how school funding could be restored simply by rolling back corporate tax breaks. In this section, we will cover how to rebuild a full employment economy. We will begin with a review of the underlying causes of our current economic crisis. We will then examine the REAL unemployment rate in our State by counting the thousands of invisible unemployed workers who have been unemployed for more than a year and therefore no longer count as part of the official workforce. We will then discuss how creation of a public bank would save tax payers billions of dollars and create tens of thousands of jobs by cutting the interest rate on public projects in half. With more than one million unemployed workers in our State, we can no longer afford to elect Do Nothing politicians who spend all of their time giving away tax breaks to wealthy multinational corporations and none of their time creating jobs to rebuild our economy. Click on the links below to learn more about how we can rebuild a full employment economy here in our State.
